A simple titration method for determining the specific gravity on one drop of urine.

چکیده
Samples of urine which have been collected by ureteric catheterization are necessarily small in volume, often only a few drops. In order to determine the efficiency of kidney function it may be necessary to measure the specific gravity of these small samples, but it is impossible to use the hydrometer method, which requires a minimum of about 50 ml. of urine. Methods involving the suspension of drops of urine in solvents, which are immiscible with water, are a possible alternative. Dukes (1939) has described a method based on these principles, but it has some disadvantages. A drop of urine is added to a mixture of carbon tetrachloride and xylol, and the composition of the mixture is adjusted by adding one of the constituents until the drop of urine floats in an equilibrium position. The specific gravity of the mixture is then measured with a urinometer. This requires the use of large volumes of reference liquid, 50 ml., for each test, and errors may be introduced due to the fact that the slight solubility of water in the 50 ml. of liquid may appreciably alter the composition of the drop of urine. The method of Monroe and Hopper (1946) makes use of a series of standard mixtures of xylol and bromobenzene of known specific gravity. Drops of urine are added to these mixtures in turn until the equilibrium mixture is found. This method is open to the same possibility of error, due to the relatively large volume of reference liquid used, as is the first method. Several drops of urine are required for the test and may not always be available. There is also the disadvantage that it is necessary to keep a large number of standard mixtures.

Introduction: Water is an essential nutrient for life. It comprises 75% of total body weight in infants,60% in adult males and 50% in adult females. Decrease in body water is commonly known as dehydration. Acute or chronic dehydration is a common condition in some population groups, especialy the elderly and those who participate in physical activity in warm enviroments. Potential consequences ...
متن کاملInversion of Gravity Data by Constrained Nonlinear Optimization based on nonlinear Programming Techniques for Mapping Bedrock Topography
A constrained nonlinear optimization method based on nonlinear programming techniques has been applied to map geometry of bedrock of sedimentary basins by inversion of gravity anomaly data. In the inversion, the applying model is a 2-D model that is composed of a set of juxtaposed prisms whose lower depths have been considered as unknown model parameters. The applied inversion method is a nonli...
متن کاملFour different types of a single drop dripping down a hole under gravity by lattice Boltzmann method
In this paper the dynamic of a droplet on a surface with a hole is investigated under gravitational effect by using lattice Boltzmann method. Incompressible two-phase flow with high density ratio proposed by Lee is considered. Cahn’s theory is used to observe the wettability of the surface in contact with liquid and gas phases. Several parameters such as contact angle, surface tension and gravi...
متن کاملOptimizing and Stabilizing the Gas Lift Operation by Controlling the Lift Gas Specific Gravity
One of the factors which affects the gas lift performance is specific gravity of a lift gas (or the Molecular weight), which can influence the gas solubility in oil and has a direct effect on the gas lift performance. There are some previous researches which have included the lift gas specific gravity in their modeling, but in none of them, a comprehensive research about the effect of lift gas ...
